Answer
Information on the number of patients currently awaiting removal of Essure is not available centrally in the Department. HSC Trusts were asked to provide information and the following responses were submitted.
There are currently less than five patients awaiting removal of Essure within Belfast Trust waiting lists.
Within the Western Trust there are no patients waiting on Essure removal.
The Northern and South Eastern Trusts were unable to provide a response as they advised that the coding for this procedure would not be specific to Essure and could be the reversal of any female sterilisation procedure.
The Southern Trust ceased the completion of procedures using Essure in August 2017, following guidance issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued its guidance.
