Answer
My assessment is, that the number of road deaths so far in 2024 is a matter of huge concern, and should be
something that is shocking to us all as a society.
Last year, in 2023, 71 people sadly lost their lives on our roads – the highest number of road fatalities in eight
years. As at the end of April, more people had died on our roads this year, than last. So, it is clear that more must
be done.
As I’ve already stated, I am bringing the revised Road Safety Strategy to the Executive for their endorsement
after which we’ll collectively consider the appropriate actions to reduce the numbers killed on our roads.
Those actions need to cover a wide range of factors across engineering, education and enforcement which will
create safe roads, safe vehicles and safe people.
